April 13th – I was invited to make a presentation to women from the University of California Santa Cruz at the Women At Work Retreat. This was my second year presenting at this event and a wonderful opportunity to meet with women I wouldn’t normally get to share this work with. The event is a two-day retreat for women where they kick back, learn new things, enjoy each other, and new friends like me… I loved every minute of my time with these ladies where we got down to really talking about what they wanted and how to use the Amazon Principals to stay focused on it. I can safely say that they LOVED the freedom that the Amazon Principals offered them, and had a lot of questions and ideas making my time with them super fun, and enjoyable for all of us.

The Basic Amazon Principals

I’m writing this sitting in my partner’s car, in the “Meadow” in Yosemite. In fact, I’m parked right below the magnificent El Capitan where he is climbing for the day. As I have been developing this program, and maintaining my coaching work, I have many things to do; write, arrange, clean – whatever – at home and I’ve been focused that way for months, leaving little time to share with each other. I was excited that we could carve out a little time together, AND have the freedom to get a bit of writing done.
Generally, we travel well together, and this was no exception – until we had a misunderstanding. It wasn’t “fun”, and neither one of us felt very good being polarized. Without all the details, as they aren’t really important, I fully engaged my own work in getting to some fundamental clarity about what I had to shift and emerging on the other side, peacefully.
In my Special Report, I cover what the four Amazon Principals are;
An Amazon Knows What She Wants
An Amazon Stands Her Ground
An Amazon Replenishes Her Energy
An Amazon Takes Responsibility For Herself
I’ll take you through how these worked so well for me in this situation, and it may surprise you.
What I want is to feel love and appreciation in my primary relationship – what I had was anger and misunderstanding. From that basic position of wanting peace, I stepped away from our disagreement when I became unkind. That was NOT what I wanted, not at all.
I allowed myself to go all the way into what was bothering me, and discovered that I had made a few assumptions, and could possibly be wrong in my assessment. How was I to know what he was really thinking, we were both angry? Ahh… some movement.
Then, in standing my ground. My “ground” wasn’t about being right, it was about wanting to give and receive - respect and love. Still bristling (I do have a mighty temper), I listened to what he had to say, and we had a tentative embrace. I could appreciate that what he said was true for him. I didn’t agree entirely, but I could now appreciate what he was upset about.
I still had some work to do.
As he made ready for his climbing the next day, I cuddled up in the van and prayed. Yup, I just did my mantra with my mala beads for a long while. I didn’t stop when Rob settled into sleep; I stopped when I felt replenished and peaceful.
When morning came, we emerged from sleep still a little distant but kind to one another. I was having a lot of trouble taking full responsibility for my experience, and as we talked about things I understood what actually occurred within me, and I was able to shift off of anger and into peace – I took responsibility for my experience in my heart and finally felt released.
This appears to be a gentle process, and it is – but it requires something surprising. Freedom from suffering doesn’t come because someone outside of us makes it happen, it comes when we embrace ourselves and get down to the very basic, fundamental desires that we possess.
I’ve been astounded by the value of these principals in my life, and in those of my clients and students who are utilizing them. It isn’t all that easy to do, yet it is simple…. |

The Amazon Warriors were born out of a desperate need to resist the slow and steady eroding of human cultures that were “matriarchal” at their center. Matriarchal actually means, “from the mother”. It doesn’t necessarily imply that women were valued more than men, as the term patriarchy implies, but that women were equally valued and retained positions of authority and leadership within communities, and the lineage was tracked through the mother.
Now, it’s clear to me that nothing from the ancient past can be a definite truth, nothing definitive was recorded in text, or writing that we can decipher. Rather, we only have artifacts and images that point to cultures that revolved around a “sacred mother”. Just the fact that people enjoyed many centuries of peaceful existence and that all new inventions were things that sustained life, rather than designed to snuff it out, indicates the success of these cultures throughout millennium. Really, there isn’t anything that points to people focusing on war or aggression until about 3800 B.C. Then it starts to change.
Human settlements throughout the world were unfortified, and appeared to be prosperous. People lived long lives, and seemed to have been organized around a clan structure that was deeply religious. Without going into great detail here, we can safely surmise that humans were pretty peaceful and innovative.
The reasons why the cultural paradigm changed cannot be fully understood, but the fact that it did is obvious. As time marched on, the art and artifacts start to include spears and weapons, and elaborate graves emerge where there hadn’t been any of these found from earlier times. As the culture became more war like, further evidence of leadership emerges that point to women becoming warriors in addition to Queens.
So, what does this have to do with contemporary women? Plenty.
Women generally aren’t prone to violence; it’s practically against our nature – unless our children are at risk. It stands to reason that these women were literally forced to take up weapons in order to keep their world intact. As I’ve said it appears that the Amazons enacted the first resistance movement known to human kind. This contemporary Amazonwork is actually not a resistance movement, but an acceptance movement of our deeply powerful inherent strengths of leadership, and strategic thinking.
As time goes on, I’ll introduce you to famous Amazons from the past, and stories about female history (or shall I say “herstory”) that I know will be fascinating for you. Again, if you have any jewels to share send them along! I frankly can’t get enough of this stuff.
Allow me to help you with your challenges so that you begin to make the shifts that provide you with more of what you want. I've created a program designed to help you start to use the Amazon Principals effectively in just one session. You can begin to use the simple methods for change, and get the help and support you'll need to make it much easier... the results you'll get will surprise you!

Chelsea Briggen
I believe that it’s important to shine a light on what today’s woman is up to that indicates her ability to be the “fierce and gentle” female that incorporates my perspective of “Amazon”. In most of my newsletters, I will feature women – some famous and many who are not – that I believe have the makings of a “Contemporary Amazon”.
In time, I’d like to begin interviewing these women, and provide you with a constant stream of powerful female voices, via podcasts that can inspire you in your life.
This week, I’m featuring a woman who I am very close to, and in the next few weeks I will feature her sisters – They are the “original Amazons” in my life. My daughters.
Chelsea Briggen is 25 and an artist. She does multi-media art, primarily on canvas or in the form of beautiful jewels (praying woman at the top of this newsletter is her work, and photo of the necklace below, is also hers). The distinction of “Amazon” applies to all women, and how Chelsea describes it is through her unflinching determination to persist in her quest to be a whole and dignified human being who makes up her own mind, and defines her life from the inside out.
Chelsea is the oldest of my children, so she and I learned a lot about growing up together. She learned early on in her life how to care for others with all her siblings being born in rapid-fire order. In recent years is learning how to really care for herself. Sound familiar?
Some time ago she had met a young man, fell in love, and they decided that they wanted to marry. It seemed she was directed and focused – excited about her future and loving her “now”. Then, last year that relationship ended and Chelsea found herself pretty devastated and confused. She returned home, and slowly started to pick up the pieces of her life.
Of her own accord, she began to unravel the pieces of her perspective and uncover all the ways that she had contributed to choosing partners that weren’t partners and experiences that were not supportive of her. Bit by bit, and piece-by-piece she has redesigned her life. She hired a coach, and set up a support system that she is constantly reaching into that has allowed her to become incredibly clear about who she is on her own, without bouncing it off a man, a career, or her family.
This takes courage, and determination. It is also not for the faint of heart. She has looked at herself through a spiritual microscope and keeps changing and growing – never assuming that she will be finished with her development, and of late, celebrating her newfound joy.
She is autonomous, and connected, creative and expanding. Chelsea is becoming secure and capable in her own right, without the outside distinctions I mentioned above, defining her identity.
In all honesty, watching her discover herself has been remarkable for me – not only as her mother, but also as a woman intent on looking for powerful female examples to model.

During the week of April 16-22, 2007 the great big happening event astrologically is the New Moon in Aries on Tuesday, April 17th. When the Moon is new, it’s always in the same sign of the Zodiac as the Sun is at that time. (When it’s full it’s in the opposite sign). So, with Sun and Moon both in Aries we’re talking about a pretty big batch of potential emerging here.
The New Moon is always a great time to start new projects of any kind. It’s a time to initiate new things… There is also a trine with Pluto (you really don’t need to know what that means, I’ll give you what you need to know – I promise!) which just makes this particular Aries New Moon extra meaningful, and more powerful – in fact just one major project may become your focus with Pluto’s effect on the Moon and Sun.
The planet Saturn goes direct on the 19th… so, all those things that have been feeling stalled may just loosen up and the things that you have merely been envisioning, will begin to come into form. I could say “expect miracles”!
On the 20th, the Sun moves into Taurus, which will make this week even more capable of compressing your ideas into concrete form.
If you know any Taurus people, you know how stubborn and determined they can be. It’s all about making it happen for a Taurus… well, this is no different. Your affirmations are only going to get that much more productive this week, so keep up the muttering, and you’ll be seeing some results this week!
Just in case you aren’t aware of it… I offer a monthly astrological program where you receive a monthly transit report delivered right to your inbox, and huge discounts off my regular astrological readings! (HUGE – like $100 off!!!)
You can click here to find out more about this program.
